D-Aspartic (D-Asp) is one of the non-essential amino acid mostly found in brain tissue. It plays a key role in the production of many other amino acids and nucleic acids (DNA, RNA, etc). [1]

It is usually found in brain tissue and gonads, it is said to play a key role in the nervous system and neuroendocrine system. [2] [3]

Recently D-aspartic acid has gained a lot of hype as a gym supplement it is being promoted as a testosterone booster for improving athletic performance.

How does D Aspartic Acid Work?

D-asp acid found in the brain acts like a neurotransmitter, they are chemical messengers of the body. [4] [5]

Research showed that D-asp is also found in hypothalamus and testes where it is utilized in the production of hormones like testosterone and luteinizing hormone. [6] [7] [8]

In a study, it was demonstrated that D-asp in the boar testes helps in increased production of oestrogen hormone. Similar action was also demonstrated in lizard testes. [9] [10] [11]

Benefits of Aspartic Acid

1. May Boost Testosterone Levels

There are some mixed results from all the studies done on humans so far. Some studies showed that D-aspartic acid can increase testosterone, levels only in healthy men with little to no exercise for only a short period of time. But prolonged usage is associated with both an increase and no significant change. More human studies are needed.

Confidence level: High

In a study conducted in 23 healthy men aged between 27–37 years, 20 of these men showed that taking D-aspartic acid helped approximately 42% increase in their testosterone levels after only 12 days of supplementation. [12]

Likewise, another study conducted in obese and overweight men supplemented with D-aspartic acid for 28 days showed mixed results.

Only those men with lower testosterone at the beginning of the study experienced an increase in their testosterone levels. However other men did not show any increase. [13]

In another study healthy men aged between 27–43 years, took D-aspartic acid supplements for 90 days; most of them experienced a 30–60% increase in their testosterone levels. [14]

On the contrary, a study reported no increase of testosterone levels in weight lifting adult men taking D-aspartic acid for 28 days. [15]

Also, another study found that taking 6 grams of the D-aspartic acid supplement per day for two weeks actually decreased the testosterone levels in young men who weight train. [16]

Benefits of Aspartic Acid

2. May Help Increase Sperm Quality

D-Aspartic acid has claimed to increases testosterone levels and other sex hormones in some animal studies as well as in healthy adult male. [17] Thus scientists proposed that consuming aspartic acid supplements or foods rich in it can help improve the sperm mobility and quantity in infertile men. Although more human research is needed.

Confidence level: High

In the studies conducted in different animals like male rabbits, rooster, and rats, a mixture of both L-Aspartic acid and D-Aspartic acid supplements helped increase the number, speed, and mobility of their sperms. [18] [19] [20] [21]

Similar results were also observed in a human trial, infertile men had much lower levels of aspartic acid in mature sperms and semen than found in fertile men according to a study.[22]

In another study 60 men with low sperm count and/or poor mobility of sperm, showed an increase in their sperm counts and improved mobility after taking D-Aspartic acid supplements approximately 2.5 grams daily for 90 days. 26 out of 60 participants had positive pregnancy. [23]

One study shows that treating sperm with the mixture of D-Asp, zinc, and CoQ10 (coenzyme Q10) together improves the swimming and mobility of human sperms used for in-vitro fertilization (IVF). This mixture also prevented damage to sperm DNA and lipids during IVF. [24] [25] [26] [27]

3. May play a Role in Female Fertility

Recently scientists proposed that D-aspartic acid may also play a role in ovulation in women. Several animal studies show that the quality of ovum (female egg) may be influenced by D-Aspartic acid naturally present in the follicular fluid.

Confidence level: Low

Several animal studies confirm that D-aspartic acid plays a key role in onset of puberty and ovaries maturation. [28] [29] [30] [31] [32]

One study in human females has shown that levels of aspartic acid in follicular fluid in the ovaries declines with increasing age. [33]

Scientists believe that this decline in aspartic acid is linked to the poor egg quality and increase in numbers of unsuccessful pregnancies for aging women. [34] [35]

D-aspartic acid may improve egg quality by influencing growth hormone, prolactin, oestrogen, progesterone, nitric oxide, amino acids, and proteins. [36] [37] [38]

4. Aspartic acid may help boost mental health

Experiments so far suggest that D-aspartic acid when orally ingested can work as a mental health enhancer and memory booster.

Confidence level: Low

D-aspartic acid is associated with nervous system development where it carries out important physiological functions. [39]

In an animal study, 40mM Sodium-D-Aspartate given daily for 12-16 days showed an enhanced neuronal function and memory in rats. [40]

Similarly, one human study also showed increased levels of an enzyme D-amine oxidase (DAO) that help boost memory and thought processes. [41] [42]

Dosage

One study used 2.66 grams of supplements daily for 90 days without any reported side-effects. [43]

On the contrary, two separate studies reported a decrease in the testosterone levels in healthy adult males taking 6 grams of D-Asp daily for two weeks. [44] [45]

Precautions

So far no harmful side-effects in humans consuming dietary D-Aspartic acid supplements are reported.

Due to restricted information and research D-aspartic acid supplements are not recommended in otherwise healthy women, pregnant women, lactating women, and children.

It is always advisable to consult a doctor or an expert before starting this or any other dietary supplements.

Drug Interactions

According to Drug Bank that is an all-inclusive online scientific database, drug interaction information for D-Asp is “Not Available”. [46]

Does D aspartic acid increase oestrogen?

Animal research shows that D-aspartic acid can both decrease and increase both testosterone and oestrogen levels depending on their respective concentration. It can convert testosterone to oestrogen when there is a higher concentration of testosterone in order to balance their ratios.

Thus, it does not directly affect the oestrogen level but only acts to decrease or level up the concentration of testosterone.

In the end..

D Aspartic Acid may prove to be helpful in many cases.
