Cinnamon for the Immune System

The immune system protects our body from harmful substances like toxins, trauma, bacteria, heat or other causes.

The immune system responds to antigens which are usually protein molecules found on the surface of fungi, bacteria or viruses.

Any substance which contains such antigens – also found in drugs, foreign objects or chemicals – are destroyed by the immune system.

There are different types of immunity – innate immunity that acts as a barrier against foreign invasion – e.g. cough reflex or skin.

To boost our immune system, our diet should be rich in fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy products and whole grains.

Cinnamon oil found in mints, candies or chewing gum could cause sores around the mouth and lips. Very high levels of cassia cinnamon cause liver toxicity.

Those with diabetes or suffer from breast and other hormonal cancers must exercise caution when taking cinnamon. Coumarin in cinnamon could also affect the liver.

It should be used carefully by those taking antibiotics, pregnant and breastfeeding women and those with heart conditions.
