Rosehips are fruits obtained from wild roses, Rosa canina, also commonly known as dog-rose. This plant is native to Europe, Africa and western Asia. [1]

The seeds and the fruits of the plant are used to extract oil, which has manifold medicinal and commercial benefits. The plant is rich in antioxidants wherein 100 g of the fruit contains vitamin C equivalent to a case of oranges. [2]

Rosehips are used in several food products like jams, jellies, marmalades, juice, wine, teas and dried salmon eggs. [3]

Because of its high ascorbic acid, phenolic and flavonoid content, along with its antioxidant properties, rosehip finds it uses in treating ailments like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, diabetes amongst many other diseases.

Rosehip oil is excellent for skincare and has anti-aging, scar-fading, anti-wrinkle properties.

Rosehip oil is extracted from the fruit and seeds via cold press as it retains maximum concentration of all-trans retinoic acid, a major constituent of cosmetics, owing to its regenerative property. [4]

The oil can also be obtained via microwave sub- and supercritical fluid extraction to retain the maximum amount of unsaturated fatty acids. [5]

Pharmacology of Rosehip Oil

Rosehip fruits contain very high concentrations of ascorbic acid, i.e. vitamin C. In a study carried out in Turkey, vitamin C content of fresh pulp of the fruit ranged from 106-2712g of vitamin C/100g of the pulp. [6]

High concentrations of total polyphenolic content (TPC) were measured in many species of the rosehip plants, which impart to its free radical scavenging properties. [7]

They also contain high quantities of polyunsaturated fatty acids which are good for the skin, including oleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, and cis-linoleic acid. [8],[9] It also includes omega-3 and omega-6 FA.

A galactolipid, GOPO(1,2-di-O-α-linolenoyl-3-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl-sn-glycerol), present in rosehips possess potential anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and collagen synthesis inducing activities. [10]

Methanolic extract of rosehip has also been suggested for inhibiting melanogenesis, preventing hyperpigmentation. [11]

Acid content, p-anisidine, and peroxide values along with iron and copper contents are richly present in the rosehip essential oil.

Rosehips are also very rich in vitamins P, B1, B2, E and K and minerals such as calcium, potassium and phosphorous. All these play an imperative role in regulating the metabolism of the body.

100g of rosehips may provide 250g of calcium, half of the daily recommended intake of the mineral. [12]

Not only do the flavonoids, carotenoids, and xanthophylls impart to rosehips its nutritive properties, making them excellent additives in food products, but also help in preventing arteriosclerosis, cancer and inflammatory disorders. [13]

Disclaimer: The rosehip oil that is extracted from the rosehip fruit and seeds has similar phytoconstituents. Thus, medical indications that may be treated using rosehip powder, tea or extract may also find similar effects using the rosehip essential oil.

However, studies regarding the same have not yet been carried out.

Thus it is recommended to consult a physician regarding the use of the oil for these indications that have been treated using powder, oral supplements or other routes of administration.

Key Benefits of Rosehip Oil

1. It is an Effective Skincare Agent

Best Rose Hip Seed Essential Oil

Rosehip has been proven to be scientifically effective in delaying skin-aging, preventing wrinkling of the skin, inhibiting hyperpigmentation, and moisturizing, hydrating and exfoliating the skin.

Rosehip oil is also effective for the treatment of stretch marks, acne, and open wounds.

Confidence: High

Anti-wrinkle and Stretch marks

In a double-blind trial carried out on 34 subjects with wrinkles on their face, rosehip powder was ingested by one half, and a proven remedy for wrinkles called astaxanthin, was given to the other half.

After an 8-week treatment period, subjects ingesting rosehip powder showed significant improvements in wrinkles, skin moisture and elasticity.

In the same study, cell longevity was tested, by analyzing leak of hemoglobin from erythrocytes of the blood of the subjects, after treatment with rosehip powder.

Cell-longevity also improved after the 4-week treatment. [14]

In a trial carried out on pregnant women, a cream containing hydroxyprolisilane C, rosehip oil, Centella asiatica triterpenes, and vitamin E was applied to them.

It was seen that its application reduced the severity of, prevented the appearance of and inhibited the progression of already present stretch marks, as compared to the control group treated with cream containing no active ingredients. [15]

Anti-aging

In a patent filed for an anti-aging cream, rosehip oil has been used as the preferred cicatrizant agent that promotes healing via formation of scar tissue. [16]

Vitamin C, present in high quantities in rosehip, is also a proven anti-aging substance that induces collagen synthesis in all age groups, with minimal adverse effects. [17]

In an in vitro study carried out on Hs-68 fibroblasts, it was seen that UV-B induced damage causing photo-ageing, was reduced after treatment with rosehip multiflora extract by downregulation of matrix metalloproteinases (enzymes that degrade extracellular matrix proteins).

It upregulated the synthesis of type I and IV collagens thus preventing wrinkle formation. [18]

Preventing Hyperpigmentation and inducing Skin Lightening

In an in vitro study carried out on B16 melanoma cells, treatment with methanolic extract of rosehip, caused a significant inhibition of melanogenesis, because of inhibition of the tyrosinase enzyme responsible for melanogenesis, by quercetin. [19]

In another study carried out to evaluate the effect of rosehip extract on UV-induced pigmentation of the skin, brown guinea pigs were orally administered with the rose hip extract.

The results of the experiment showed that melanogenesis was significantly reduced in guinea pigs treated with rosehip and that the extract would make an effective skin-lightening agent. [20]

Treating Surgical wounds and Skin Disorders

In a study carried out in 108 patients undergoing cutaneous surgery procedures, the effect of rosehip seed oil was tested for evaluating its effect on the improvement of skin scarring, post-surgery.

A lesser degree of erythema, atrophy and discolouration was observed in patients treated with rosehip oil (applied twice a day), after a 6-week and 12-week treatment. [21]

Women (age 45 to 68 years) who had undergone mastectomy were made to apply rosehip oil, twice a day, for 3 months. This led to less apparent scars, skin thickening and improved skin elasticity and coloration were observed. [22]

A 26% rosehip seed oily solution was applied to 10 patients, part of a study, suffering from varicose ulcers and post-surgery wounds.

After treatment, enhanced recovery and epithelization of the wounds were observed. [23]

Topical application of rosehip seed oil on 75 patients, part of an exploratory study, together with an oral polyvitamin preparation of fat-soluble vitamins showed promising results in treating skin conditions like eczema, trophic ulcers, neurodermatitis, cheilitis, and other dermatoses. [24]

2. Helps in Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis

Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, owing to the presence of a galactolipid, and other antioxidant properties, rosehip oil is used to treat and prevent the inflammation of joints that occurs in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Confidence: High

In a double-blind, crossover clinical trial, 47 patients were given 2.5g of rosehip remedy preparation, twice daily, for 3 months.

The control group was given the same amount of placebo, which was then switched to treatment with the rosehip remedy, and the treatment group was switched to placebo.

It was seen that there was a significant decrease in pain according to the WOMAC scale and that usage of rescue medicine to alleviate the pain, such as aspirin, was also reduced significantly.

Reduction in disability, stiffness and severity of the disease also reportedly reduced after a treatment of 3 months. [25]

In a randomized, double-blind study, 100 patients suffering from osteoarthritis were evaluated for the effect of rosehip powder on their symptoms.

In the 50 people given treatment, with capsules containing 0.5g of the powder, twice daily, there was a significant improvement in hip joint mobility and pain associated with osteoarthritis, as compared to placebo-treated group. [26]

In yet another double-blind, crossover clinical trial carried out, 112 patients were treated with 5g of Hyben Vital, a standardized rosehip powder, for three months.

Not only did joint pain and stiffness ameliorate after 3 months, but general wellbeing, mood, sleep quality and energy also improved, as compared to the group.[27]

In a double-blind trial, 89 patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, were treated with 5g of rosehip powder daily, for 6 months.

At the end of the treatment, the duration of the disease decreased, the RAQoL (rheumatoid arthritis quality of life) score and SF-12 mental score remained unchanged.

However, the DAS-28 score, indicative of disease activity improved, as compared to placebo. The pain did not reduce significantly, either. [28]

In another study carried out on healthy subjects, a daily dosage of 45g (or lower) of rosehip powder resulted in decreased chemotaxis of peripheral blood polymorphonuclear leukocytes, an indication of reduced inflammation, and a decrement in serum creatinine and acute phase protein CRP, which is an inflammatory marker for rheumatoid arthritis. [29]

In a randomized trial carried out on 287 patients suffering from arthritis, treatment for 3 months showed a significant decrement in pain scores with no adverse effects such as ulcerogenic effects, platelet, fibrinolysis  and coagulation inhibition, as usually observed in treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and aspirin. [30]

3. It may possess antimicrobial Activity

Confidence: Low

In a study carried out to screen seeds of Scottish plants for their antimicrobial effect, seeds of rosehip showed antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, exhibiting a minimum inhibitory concentration as low as 0.1mg/ml.

Thus, the oil extracted from the seeds could also exhibit the same property. [31]

In another study, it was shown that tellimagrandin I (a type of tannin)  obtained from rosehip enhanced the activity of oxacillin, a beta-lactam drug, against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), by reducing its minimum inhibitory concentration against the organism. [32]

In a study carried out using carotenoid extracts of rosehips, it was seen that the extracts rich in lycopene, beta-carotene, neoxanthin, amongst many others, showed an antimicrobial effect against Helicobacter pylori, which causes peptic ulcers in humans.

The minimum inhibitory concentrations were as low as 8.2µg/ml and 11µg/ml. [33]

Dosage

Dosage It is recommended that rosehip oil be stored in dark containers as it is photosensitive. It should be stored in the refrigerator to keep it preserved.

There is no clear established consensus or scientific research that recommends how to or how much of rosehip oil to use.

It is best recommended that rosehip oil be applied to the skin twice daily when used as a moisturizer or anti-aging cream.

It can be applied directly to areas having hyperpigmentation, scars, stretch marks and dry skin.

Rosehip oil should be applied to the whole face when using it as a treatment for acne.

It is best to consult the doctor if using rosehip oil for treating skin related disorders like eczema, cheilitis and trophic ulcers.

For aromatherapy, rosehip is generally used as a carrier oil to which drops of various essential oils are added. [34],[35]

Rosehip and its extract can even be taken orally as a supplement or powder.

A standardized rosehip powder Hyben Vital® can be taken orally in a dosage as high as 45g daily, added to yoghurt eaten during lunch, for a period of 8 weeks.

This has been proven to reduce wrinkles, improve skin elasticity and moisture. [36]

Repavar®, a rosehip oil, can be applied to surgical scars, twice daily, for a period of at least 6 weeks, to improve erythema and discoloration associated with the scar. [37]

To relieve symptoms of knee and hip osteoarthritis, 5 of rosehip powder can be taken daily, at least for a period of 3 months. [38]

Hyben Vital® at a dosage of 5g daily can also be taken to ameliorate symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. [39]

Rosehip drink containing 40g of rosehip powder can be drunk daily, for a period of 6 months, to reduce cholesterol levels, blood pressure and generally help with obesity-related conditions. [40]

Precautions

Adverse effects

Precautions Higher doses of the rosehip powder may induce mild gastrointestinal disturbances like diarrhea, flatulence, loose stools and persistent obstipation. [41]

It is possible to get contact dermatitis on the application of rosehip oil, however, there is not sufficient evidence for the same. [42]

It is also possible that the risk of many adverse outcomes such as kidney stones, alteration of blood pH, delay of blood clotting time, increased iron absorption may occur due to high concentrations of Vitamin C. [43]

Safety During Pregnancy, Lactation, And Childhood

There has not been enough research carried out to establish the safety for use of rosehip oil or other products during pregnancy, lactation, and childhood, and is best recommended to be taken only under the advisement of a doctor or physician.

Known Health Conditions

Since rosehip oil and other products have a strong anti-inflammatory response and reduce chemotaxis, it is best recommended to not give rosehip oil and products to immunosuppressed patients, as it may further worsen their condition.

Since rosehip also contains rugosin, which is known to cause blood clots, the use of rosehip is best avoided with people who may have previously suffered a stroke. [44]

Interactions

With the high concentration of vitamin C present in rosehip oil and other derivatives, drugs such as Prolixin, a neuroleptic, that interacts with vitamin C must be avoided.

Aluminum and estrogen are also known to interact with vitamin C and thus antacids containing aluminum and estrogen pills must be avoided. As a large amount of vitamin C interferes with warfarin, its use should be avoided to delay blood clotting. [45]

Overdosage

No reports of overdosage have been found. Intake as high as 45g is safe. [46] Application of rosehip oil in substantial quantities is also safe. [47]
